EPHESIANS: The Operational Manual For the Church
Pastor David Proffitt
Ephesians 5:8: “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.”
Ephesians functions like an “operational manual” because it explains:
1. Who the Church is.
2. What resources God has provided.
3. How believers are to live and fight spiritually.
Structure of Ephesians: Paul moves from theology to application
Position (Chapters 1-3) - “Who are we?”
The first half of Ephesians focuses on:
- Spiritual identity
- God’s eternal plan
- Unity in Christ
- Spiritual authority and blessings
Practice (Chapters 4-6) - “What should we be doing?”
The second half shifts from position to conduct.
Historical Background
- Ephesus was a port city on the west coast
- Tampa is also a port city
The comparison to Tampa is useful because: Both are port cities, culturally influential, economically strategic and experience spiritual and moral pressures common to major urban centers.
Verse 1 "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ" - Paul's name was originally Shaul from shaal 'ask'
- apostolos apo-from stello- to send Paul knew what his spiritual gift was...do we?
Verse 1: “To the saints who are in Ephesus”
Hagioi - “object of awe” - horizontal relationship, Your position affects your witness.
“And are faithful in Christ Jesus”
Pisteuo - “reliability” - vertical relationship - describes a believer’s relationship with God
1. Before Men - We are Holy
2. Before God - Reliable
Two Locations - In Ephesus - physical location, In Christ Jesus - spiritual location
Verse 2 - “Grace to you and peace”
Grace - Charis / Charizomai - Celebrate, favor one thing over another
Peace - to join
Verse 3 - Blessed be the God and Father
Who has Blessed us in Christ, with every spiritual blessing in the Heavenly Places
Main question:
“What is that?”
Why do we need the “places” if we already have the blessings?
The heavenlies is not necessarily a safe zone
Heaven - “Ouranos / οὐρανός mentioned four times in Ephesians (1:10, 3:15, 4:10, 6:9) - Sky, Atmosphere, Stellar, Place in Eternity
Heavenly Places — Epouraniois (ἐπουρανίοις)
The word for heavenlies or heavenly places is different
Mentioned five times in Eph 1:3, 1:20,2:6, 3:10, and 6:12
The word each time is not ‘heaven’ (ouraos) but ep ouran iois (emphatic heavens)
Ephesians 6:12 helps to understand the seriousness and danger of this location
Wrestle: hand-to-hand combat, not against humans - this is personal spiritual conflict
Not Against Flesh and Blood: This is going to be cage fighting - The ultimate enemy is not: People, governments, culture, or human opposition. Visible conflicts often reflect invisible spiritual realities.
Against The Rulers, Authorities, Cosmic powers, Spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. These indicate hierarchy and coordination within demonic systems.
Conclusion: Why Spiritual Blessings Matter?
Because believers are engaged in spiritual conflict in the heavenly realms
The Church is not merely:a social organization,a religious institution, or a gathering place.
The Church is Christ’s body, God’s dwelling place, and a spiritual force on earth.
Ephesians teaches believers: Who they are, where they are positioned, what resources they possess, how they must live, how they must stand
The Church cannot operate effectively without understanding both: spiritual blessing, and spiritual battle.
The operational manual of the Church begins with identity and ends with spiritual warfare.
